Connecting Colombia’s Poor Rural Farmers. (43)

  1. Megan Fielding recently returned from a two-week assignment in Medellin, Colombia, where she researched how mobile phones could be used to provide rural farmers with access to life-changing information. Her goal was to examine how mobile phones could benefit the poor in rural Colombian communities, building on Grameen Foundation’s successful development of mobile phone-based solutions in Uganda, Ghana and Indonesia.

In many areas of Latin America and the Caribbean, the most extreme poverty exists in rural areas. Smallholder farmers are trapped in a cycle of producing crops with low yields and minimal profits, largely because they are isolated from markets, forcing them to rely on middlemen to sell their products (too often at prices that benefit only the middleman). In addition, they lack access to critical information, including real-time information about weather, crop diseases, and modern farming techniques and tools. Through extensive meetings and research, Megan was able to outline the existing mobile services for the poor in Colombia and highlight opportunities where Grameen Foundation could provide its expertise.
